Leadership and Human Behavior

Leadership is a concept of human behavior that is often talked about but little understood.

There are hundreds of definitions of leadership, yet they give little insight into how to develop it to be successful in life. Leadership cannot be developed solely through education, experience, and self-discipline, although these things can help.

There are many myths and false assumptions about leadership. Once you understand what these are, you’ll be able to learn leadership skills by going to school, through work experience, and by teaching yourself. To develop leadership skills, you first need to know what to work on.

The first step to developing leadership is breaking through the false assumptions we all accept without question because we learned them at an early age. You may not believe all these assumptions, but it's a good bet you believe some of them.

False Assumptions about Leadership

  1. Leadership is innate. You’re either a born leader or you’re not. False. The truth is that leadership consists of a set of identifiable skills that can be learned. While it's true that some people have a greater aptitude for leadership than others, all of us can be leaders and develop our leadership skills.

  2. You have to have charisma and style to be a leader. It’s the way you do things, not what you do. False. Many leaders do have charisma and style, but real leadership consists of substance. Leadership is about what you do and the impact you have on others. Some great leaders have been as dull as dust and others have been charismatic. For example, Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft, is about as dull, nerdy, and uncharismatic as a person can get, yet consider what he's led others to do and the impact he's had on the entire world.

  3. Leadership is situational; it has no structure or system. False. True leadership is structured and systematic. It can be duplicated. Leadership has principles, specific skills that can be learned, and definite ways to get results. The building blocks of leadership can be developed for the successful accomplishment of goals, managing all the aspects of our lives, and creating a life that is worthwhile. If something can be systematized, it can be duplicated. You can build leadership into your life as a workable, predictable system.

  4. The boss is the leader, and it can't be any other way. False. Often the exact opposite is true. In businesses, families, schools, and groups, anyone can be a leader. Leadership doesn’t consist of being “bossy.” Being bossy generates confusion and conflict, whereas true leadership promotes teamwork, respect, and individual accomplishment. Leadership should be encouraged at every level of an organization.

If you believe any of these myths, you'll find it impossible to develop leadership skills in your work or individual life. If you revise your beliefs to encompass a broader viewpoint of leadership, you will be able to gain skills to empower you in all areas.
